| Resumo | If the surface temperature anomaly averaged over a large area (10°longitude x 10° latitude or larger) in the tropical and subtropical parts of South America is greater than 2.0°C for seven consecutive days or longer, in the winter half of the year, the period is considered a warm spell. During the 18 year period 1985-2003 there were 35 spells with an average duration of 13 days. The relative humidity anomaly during the warm spells was negative, on the average by 12%. The warm and dry spells (WDS) were not apparently related to the ENSO phase. Most of them, especially the most intense ones, were related to the blocking situation in the eastern South Pacific. The building up of the blockings, on the average, poreceded the formation of the WDS by a few days. The regional synoptic situation of the WDS, their extent and their interannual and monthly variabilities are described. The importance of the study of the WDS springs from the fact that they affect adversely the socio-economic activities of the population of Brazil. | |||
